Police searching for suspect in home invasion

STERLING – Police are looking for a man they say entered a home in the 800 block of West Sixth Street around 5 a.m. June 22 and tried to sexually assault a young woman.

According to a news release Tuesday, the man was a short Latino, about 45 years old, of medium build, wearing a ski mask, dark clothing and tennis shoes.

The family thought the house was locked, but there does not appear to be any signs of forced entry and it does not appear he had a weapon, Chief Ron Potthoff said.

The woman was sleeping in her bedroom when the man came in and tried to take off her clothes. An older brother, who was upstairs, heard her scream and ran out of the house after the man, who ran south toward West Fourth Street and disappeared, he said.

Nothing was taken from the home.

Anyone with information is asked to email tipline@sterling-il.gov or call police at 815-632-6640 or Whiteside County Crime Stoppers at 815-625-7867 or 877-625-7867.
