ROCK FALLS – The cost of meals is going up in Rock Falls Elementary School District 13, and in the districts that get their food from District 13.

District 13 students’ meals will go up 25 cents next school year, while East Coloma, Montmorency and Bi-County Special Education meals will increase 30 cents.

Students receiving free and reduced meals won’t be affected.

Breakfast is now $1, lunch is $1.75.

Food service losses and a federal mandate prompted the decision.

Thanks to rising food and transportation costs, the District 13 food service department lost $4,000 last year, and is on track to lose $14,000 this year, Superintendent Dan Arickx said at Tuesday’s board meeting.

In addition, the USDA has issued a mandate requiring districts to charge $2.46 for full-price meals, increasing meals at least 10 cents a year until that threshold is reached, he said.

The board also hired two full-time teachers, who will split their time between serving as a reading recovery educator and an interventionist (who works with students at risk of falling behind.)
