THOMSON – There will be no significant environmental impact from converting Thomson Correctional Center into a federal prison.

That assessment was made by the Federal Bureau of Prisons as it prepares to buy the 1,600-bed facility. The recently released environmental assessment is available for review and comment until Oct. 1. It can be accessed at the bureau’s website, www.bop.gov/news.index.isp. Copies also are available at all public libraries within 60 miles of Thomson.

Assessment findings also will be discussed at a public hearing from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday at Buck’s Barn Resort, 5020 state Route 84 in Thomson. Bureau representatives will provide an overview of the proposed action and alternatives.

Attendees can offer written or verbal comments on the assessment at the meeting

The environmental evaluation is part of the federal agency’s site appraisal process. Because no significant impact is expected, preparation of an environmental impact statement is not required under the National Environmental Policy Act.
