STERLING – It was a busy weekend for Sterling Police, who three times responded to calls of shots fired, which may or may not be related to a beating one man took early Saturday.

According to several news releases from the police, and to Sgt. John Trancoso:

At about 1:14 a.m. Saturday, police received a call about an aggravated battery that occurred in the 200 block of Fifth Avenue earlier that morning. The man, whose name was not released, had a cut on his face and was taken to CGH Medical Center for treatment.

About 15 minutes later, the call came in that shots were fired in the 800 block of Avenue K. Police found what appeared to be several bullet holes in the exterior of the house of the man who made the call.

No one was injured.

A little less than 2 hours later, police were back in the 200 block of Fifth Avenue, responding to another call of shots fired.

No one was injured in this shooting, either, but police say it may be linked to the earlier assault.

Then, shortly after midnight Sunday, officers responded to the 500 block of 11th Street, on yet another report of shots fired. Again, bullet holes were found in the exterior walls.

The house was occupied but no one was hurt, police said.

It’s too soon to say if any or all of the incidents are related, or if gangs are involved, Trancoso said Monday. No arrests have been made.

Illinois State Police Crime Scene investigators are processing the evidence, he said, and the investigation continues.

Police are asking anyone with any information about the four incidents to call 815-632-6640 or Crime Stoppers, the anonymous rewards hot line, at 815-625-7867.
