DIXON – A Dixon man was arrested Friday morning after 14 grams of marijuana and drug paraphernalia were found in his apartment, according to police.

Melvin E. Smith, 39, 624 Marclare St., is charged with unlawful possession with intent to deliver 10 to 30 grams of marijuana, punishable by 1 to 3 years in prison, and misdemeanor charges of unlawful possession of between 10 and 30 grams of marijuana, unlawful possession of drug paraphernalia, and resisting a peace officer.

Dixon Police Detective Sgt. Matt Richards said police received a tip from a confidential informant that there were drugs in Smith's apartment.

They executed the search warrant around 10:30 a.m. They found the marijuana – with a street value of $150 – and drug paraphernalia in the kitchen, Richards said.

Smith was pulling into the parking lot of the apartment complex when police approached him. Police also discovered Smith had a suspended driver's license, Richards said.

When officers told him he was under arrest, he fled on foot. Officers caught up with him a short time later and arrested him, Richards said.

He was taken to the Lee County Jail in lieu of bond.
