STERLING – Defending champion Ember Schuldt was not in the field, but DeeJay Colliflower did a pretty good imitation of the University of Illinois freshman at the Women’s Rock River Classic this weekend.
Colliflower earned medalist honors by a whopping 14 strokes to lead Sunset Golf Course of Mount Morris to the team title in the tourney that wrapped up Sunday at Lake View Golf Course near Sterling. It was the third straight team title for Sunset.
Colliflower carded a 79 on her home course in Saturday’s first round, then followed that up with a 78 at Lake View for a 157 total. That was 14 shots clear of a pair of golfers: Megan Grevas of Shady Oaks and Carolyn Kosier of Oakville.
“I couldn’t have done it without the support I had,” Colliflower said of her second RRC title. “My husband, Judd, was there with me the whole time. He’s my rock out there. My teammates are great, and playing with the guys on Thursdays definitely helps me get ready for this tournament.”
Colliflower’s best against bogey total was +21, leading her team to victory. Sunset finished +8 as a team, well ahead of runner-up Prophet Hills, which was at -18. Lake View (-34), Shady Oaks (-39) and Oakville (-44) rounded out the top five.
Joining Colliflower were Kris Welker (+2), Cheryl Satterfield (-4), Colleen Miller (-4), Brenda Higley (-5), Cheryl Christians (-7), Terri Scheidecker (-11) and Lois Steffen (-13).
Colliflower dedicated the team’s win to Salley Wessels, a long-time course member and strong tournament player whose son, Thad, died last week.
“We were all thinking of Salley this weekend,” she said.
Team runner-up Prophet Hills had four flight winners. They were Donna Moore (Fourth Flight, -4), Shelly Felske (Fifth Flight, +1), Kris Zschiesche (Sixth Flight, -12) and Karen Wiersema (Seventh Flight, -3).
Other flight winners were Shady Oaks’ Grevas (First, +9), Lake View’s Gayla Topp (Second, +6), Lake View’s Shirlene Eatinger (Third, -4) and Sunset’s Higley (Eighth, -5).
Best against bogey went to Shady Oaks’ Jackie Ackert, who was +11. Ackert also won a sportsmanship award.
The shot of the tournament was turned in by Oregon’s Val Glotfelty, who scored a hole-in-one on the 110-yard fourth hole at Lake View.
