Carroll County jail death apparent suicide

MOUNT CARROLL – A 38-year-old woman being held in the Carroll County Jail apparently hanged herself Saturday, according to a news release Monday from the Carroll County coroner.

Rachael Schmidt, 38, of Savanna was found dead in her cell around 6 a.m.

Carroll County Coroner Matthew Jones said the preliminary findings of an autopsy Monday morning indicate Schmidt died of asphyxiation by hanging.

A coroner’s inquest is pending.

Carroll County Sheriff Jeff Doran told the Clinton Herald on Monday that Schmidt was being held on domestic abuse charges, and that she had been alone in her cell.

No further information was available.

The Carroll County Coroner’s office is being assisted by the Illinois State Police Crime Scene Investigative Unit and the Stephenson County Sheriff’s Department.

Rock Falls is considering a ban on leaf burning. Should the city finally take that step?
Yes. Sterling and Dixon have had bans for years. It’s time for Rock Falls to impose a ban.
No. It would be too great a burden for homeowners to dispose of fallen leaves in other ways.
