STERLING – A new pet store is coming to Northland Mall.

Pet Supplies Plus will occupy the nearly 11,600-square-foot space in the mall’s east end that once housed REX.

Quincy-based Niemann Foods Inc. owns the Pet Supplies franchises. The Sterling store is slated to open May 5 and employ five to 10 people, Niemann spokesman Terry Kettler said Thursday.

Birds, snakes, reptiles and saltwater fish will be among the pets available, along with food, toys, accessories and other supplies for pets of all kinds.

“I think they’re a great addition,” said Northland Mall general manager Karyn Brouilette.

The Northland Mall spot will be the fifth Niemann Foods-operated pet store. “It’s a perfect fit for our customers,” Kettler said.

Pet Supplies Plus, based in Farmington Hills, Mich., has more than 20 stores in Illinois, half in the Chicago area.

It doesn’t sell dogs or cats, but it does facilitate their adoptions.

Niemann Foods Inc. also owns County Market and Save A Lot stores in Dixon, Sterling and Rock Falls, as well as Cub Foods, IGA and Ace Hardware locations in Illinois, Indiana and Iowa.

Also new at Northland

Northland Mall, 2900 E. Lincolnway, Sterling, has two new tenants already up and running:

Verizon has set up a kiosk near the main entrance, and Pete Harkness Ford-Lincoln-Mercury has added a small showroom in the spot vacated by f.y.e. in January.

“Pete’s a great supporter of the [mall]. It’s really thinking outside of the box,” Northland general manager Karyn Brouilette said.
