STERLING – The Sterling Rock Falls Amateur Radio Society is inviting the public to learn all about its activities and its dedication to public service at its 50th annual Hamfest.
The daylong event starts at 7:30 a.m. Sunday at Challand Middle School, 1700 Sixth Ave.
There will be a large indoor flea market, where participants can buy, sell or trade amateur radio equipment, new and used radios, antennas, electronic equipment, computers and hobby items.
Seminars, demonstrations and other special events are planned. Federal Communications Commission exam testing will be available from 9 to 11 a.m. (bring two forms of ID, one with a photo.)
Door prizes will be given away and concessions will be available.
Ham radio operators do more than chat with friends around the world – they also use radio skills to aid their communities during natural disasters, military emergencies, and civic events such as bicycle races and parades.
The local society meets at 7:30 p.m. the last Thursday of the month at Northern Illinois Council on Aging Golden Meals in Rock Falls. New members are welcome.
Tickets to Hamfest are $5 in advance and $6 at the door. For tickets, or or more information about the club, call Paula Portner, 815-284-5650.
