DIXON – Area residents are needed Saturday at Sauk Valley Community College, for AmeriCorps’ first Locks of Love event.

Locks of Love provides hairpieces, made from the hair of donors, to children who have long-term hair loss caused by various illnesses.

Members of AmeriCorps plan and carry out charity events throughout the year. This is the first time a Locks of Love program has been a part of their efforts, said Jodi Elmendorf, program assistant at AmeriCorps.

Elmendorf said AmeriCorps has been fortunate to receive donations from many area businesses and co-sponsors, including the Candlelight Inn in Rock Falls and Sterling; Statik Studio in Sterling, Skin Deep Spa in Dixon, the Historic Dixon Theatre, and Studio 404 in Dixon.

“So far everything has been donated,” Elmendorf said. “Stylists are donating their time this weekend. It is really an awesome thing.”

Elmendorf said the organization is hoping for a great turnout. It already has received responses from many families and community members who are attending or donating hair. There also will be activities, including obstacle courses and games, as well as entertainment, including performances by the cast of Jet Productions’ High School Musical 2.

The program will be from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at Sauk’s East Mall. Tickets are available in advance for $2 or $4 at the door. All children younger than 18 will be admitted at no charge. To register or for more information, call 815-288-5511, ext. 216.
