STERLING – Nellie Bernice Hohlen, 96, went to be with her Lord and Savior on Saturday, Feb. 6, 2010. With the help of her family and caregivers, she was able to remain in her home.
Nellie was born Jan. 29, 1914, in Sterling, the daughter of John and Helen (Stralow) Jacobs. She married Henry Hohlen on March 3, 1934, in Sterling. He preceded her in death on Oct. 12, 1963.
Nellie was a homemaker, and she farmed with her husband in the area all their married lives. She was a member of Messiah Lutheran Church, Sterling. Nellie was a devoted mother and grandmother, and loved spending time with her family.
Nellie was the dear mother of Janice (Gail) Bush of Galt, Joyce (Ron) Roberts of Sterling, Sandy (Bob) Daugherty of Little Chute, Wis., and Sherrie (Lyle) Dirks of Freeport; and two daughters-in-law, Marilou Hohlen and Pat Hohlen. She also is survived by two caring and devoted sisters, Evelyn and Dorothy Jacobs.
Nellie was the loving grandmother of Kathy (Ray) Ybarra, Kent (Sue) Hohlen, Kevin (Jennifer) Hohlen, Kristy (Tom) Loos, Eric (Kay) Bush, Troy (Kim) Bush, Todd Roberts, Jason (Jen) Roberts, Ryan (Stacy) Roberts, Laura Daugherty, Amy Daugherty, Lindsey (Eric) Winkel, Brian Daugherty, Nathan Dirks, Angela Dirks, Amber Dirks, and Jacob Dirks. Nellie was the loving great-grandmother of 23; great-great grandmother of eight; and aunt of two nieces, Karen (Ron) Nehring and Karla Hinrichs.
She was preceded in death by her husband; parents; three sons, Ronald in infancy, Duane, and Lyle; and one sister, Marjorie Hinrichs.
A service celebrating Nellie’s life and the resurrection of our Lord will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Messiah Lutheran Church, Sterling, with the Rev. Patrick Pinion officiating. Burial will be at Riverside Cemetery, Sterling. Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at Schilling Funeral Home, Sterling.
Memorials have been established to Hospice of the Rock River Valley, Dixon, and Messiah Lutheran Church, Sterling.
