ALTONA – Robert G. “Bob” Craig, 86, of Altona, died Saturday, Jan. 30, 2010, at Franklin Grove Nursing Center. He was employed by Burlington Northern Railroad, as a railway postal clerk, from 1949 to 1966, and at other post offices, including Dixon, retiring in 1979.

Mr. Craig was born Oct. 28, 1923, in Neponset, the son of Leroy George and Marie Elizabeth (Holdridge) Craig. He served in the Army during World War II from January 1943 through October 1945. He was awarded the Silver Star, with four Overseas Service Bars, for the European, African and Middle Eastern theaters; and the Combat Infantry Badge, with campaigns in France, Sicily, Rome, and Southern Rhineland, Central Europe. He married Jean R. Strom on Sept. 26, 1946, in Kewanee.
She preceded him in death on Oct. 26, 2000. He was a member of United Church of Altona.

Survivors include two daughters, Mary M. Fordham of Dixon and Sandra (Terry) Albaugh of Temecula, Calif.; two sons, Danny L. (Shirley) Craig of Lumber Bridge, N.C., and William “Bill” (Chiemi) Craig of Reno, Nev.; eight grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.

He also was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Vivian Amburgy; and a brother, Marvin Craig.
 The funeral will be at noon Saturday at Hurd-Hendricks Funeral Homes and Crematory, Oneida, with the Rev. David Pyell officiating. Burial, with military honors accorded by Charles A. Warrensford American Legion Post 726, Victoria, will be at Evergreen Memorial Gardens, Kewanee. Visitation will be from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday at the funeral home.

Memorials have been established to Knox County The Right of Information and Direction (TRIAD) and Disabled American Veterans.
