DIXON – Customers at Books on First had a bit of political discourse with their coffee Friday.

State Treasurer Alexi Giannoulias visited the bookstore on a regional campaign trip to support his bid for the U.S. Senate seat vacated by President Obama and held by Sen. Roland Burris, D-Ill., who is not seeking election.

Giannoulias is one of five Democratic Party candidates on the ballot in Tuesday’s primary elections.

The 33-year-old candidate in his first term as treasurer, chatted with potential voters on such topics as education, Chicago history and more.

“It’s [the campaign] going very well. We’re up in all the polls,” Giannoulias said. “I’m hesitant to get too excited.”

Giannoulias also stopped at Dixon City Hall to meet with Mayor Jim Burke, before heading to stops in Galesburg and Ottawa on Friday, and weekend campaign events.
