GALESBURG (AP) – The accounting firm that audited the Knox County Recorder’s office, which is headed by a woman charged with theft, has found no irregularities.

In a statement Wednesday, county government officials said Lindgren, Callihan, VanOsdol & Co. of Sterling found the office’s finances were in order.

Recorder of Deeds Paula Monzo is accused of writing about $3,500 in checks on the account of the Knox County Democratic Central Committee over the past year. Galesburg Police reports indicate Monzo was having trouble paying bills. A telephone call Thursday afternoon to Monzo attorney Karl Johnson was not immediately returned.

Monzo is not accused of misappropriating county funds, but the Knox County Board opted for the special audit to be sure. It is expected to cost the county about $1,500.

Knox County Circuit Judge Dwayne Morrison has set the preliminary hearing for Monzo for Jan. 26. She is free on bond.
