Hoosiers have no trouble handling Pitt

Verdell Jones III scored 20 points and Christian Watford had 18 to lead Indiana to a 74-64 victory over Pittsburgh on Tuesday night in the Jimmy V Classic at Madison Square Garden.

The Hoosiers (4-4), who had lost four of their last five, gave coach Tom Crean his 200th career win. Crean, who is in his second season at Indiana, won 190 games in nine seasons at Marquette.

Indiana broke open a close game with two 7-0 runs in the second half.

Ashton Gibbs had a career-high 25 points and Brad Wannaker added 18 for the Panthers (7-2).

Minnesota 94, Morgan State 64: Blake Hoffarber scored 18 points and the Golden Gophers got off to another blazing start, scoring the game’s first 18 points in a rout at home.

Lawrence Westbrook had 14 points, four assists and four steals for Minnesota (6-3), and Al Nolen added five points, six assists, five rebounds and two steals.

Reggie Holmes led the Bears (5-4) with 26 points and a career-high five steals, and Kevin Thompson chipped in 17 points and a career-high 19 rebounds.

No. 15 Georgetown 72, No. 22 Butler 65: Greg Monroe had 24 points and 15 rebounds – both career highs – as the Hoyas had success inside and outside in a win at the Jimmy V Classic at Madison Square Garden.

Austin Freeman was 4-for-5 from 3-point range and added 18 points as Georgetown (7-0) finished with a 43-30 rebounding advantage and outscored the Bulldogs 30-16 in the paint.

Gordon Hayward led the way with 24 points and 8 rebounds for Butler (6-3).

No. 23 Texas Tech 80, TCU 70: John Roberson scored eight of his 21 points in a game-turning run that finally put Texas Tech ahead as the Red Raiders overcame an early 14-point deficit.

The Red Raiders (9-0) played their first game as a ranked team since the end of the 2004-05 season, and first for Pat Knight since he succeeded father Bobby as coach in February 2008. They are off to their best start since 1929-30.

Zvonko Buljan had 24 points and 10 rebounds for TCU (5-4).
