Sterling swimmers fall in opener

The Sterling boys swimming team opened its season Monday, dropping a 112-71 decision to Rockford Boylan at the Duis Center.

The Golden Warriors earned a pair of event wins. Jim Fliss won the 100-yard freestyle in a time of 54.87 seconds, and George Kelly won the 100 breaststroke in of 1 minute, 8.77 seconds.

The Warriors had eight runner-up performances.

Girls bowling

Sterling 2,897, Streator 2,653: Freshmen Brandy Behrens and Amber Granzow led the Golden Warriors to an NCIC victory at Streator.

Behrens rolled the high game (202) and series (546) as Sterling improved to 2-1. Granzow had a 524 series, with a high game of 188.

Girls basketball

AFC 50, Mooseheart 44: Kim Mairs scored 17 points and Audra Lundquist 14 to lead the Raiders at Ashton.

AFC outscored Mooseheart 19-10 in the fourth quarter. The Raiders led 12-7 after one quarter and 24-21 at the half before falling behind 34-31 after three quarters.

West Carroll 45, East Dubuque 37: Becca Fritz scored 13 points and Sophi Morhardt added nine to lead the Thunder to an NUIC West win at Savanna.

West Carroll trailed 10-6 after one quarter and 22-16 at the half before outscoring winless East Dubuque 29-15 in the second half.
