Champaign, then lobster for Mustangs
Morrison line coach Tim Stout is going to be picking up quite a tab sometime in the next few weeks.
Stout, a 13-year member of the Mustangs staff, has made a promise to his players at the beginning of each season. This marks the first time he will have to pay up.
“If they win state, I’m buying them steak and lobster dinners,” Stout said. “So I guess I’m buying them steak and lobster dinners. It’s going to cost me a thousand bucks, maybe two. I don’t really care.”
Balanced attack: On Friday, three Mustangs reached season milestones.
First, Josh Vos eclipsed 2,000 rushing yards with his 172 yards on 27 carries. Vos finished with 2,115 yards this season, and he also passed 2008 grad Nate McBride as the team’s all-time leading rusher, a title that has changed hands three times the past four seasons, with McBride passing 2007 grad Nick Vandermyde.
Vos’ two backfield mates also surpassed key numbers. Kyle Janssen went over 1,000 yards rushing with his 111-yard effort. He has 1,104 yards for the season. Conner Bealer passed the 500-yard mark with his 33 rushing yards to finish with 525.
“We like to think of ourselves as a three-headed monster,” Vos said. “They came out focused on me and that opened up things for the other two guys. Later, I started to get more yards as they tried to stop the other two.”
Andrew Cook nearly made the 1,000-yard passing mark. He entered the game with 930 yards. Cook completed three passes for 57 yards.
Sock it to me: Morrison senior running back and linebacker Josh Vos stuck out for more than his play. He was the only player wearing candy cane-style red and white knee socks.
“I saw them shopping the other day and I thought they’d look pretty good, so I decided to buy them,” Vos said. “They look a little bit old-school, I guess you could say.”
Wrestling can wait: Defensive coordinator Gregg Dolan is also the Morrison wrestling coach. Since practice began nearly three weeks ago, Dolan has been to only a handful of practices, instead entrusting his team primarily to assistant Tony Wright.
“This is more than worth it,” Dolan said.
Loud and clear: Jim Spencer, the radio voice of Sterling High School athletics, was the lead announcer on the IHSA television network’s coverage of the Class 1A game between Lexington and Tuscola and the 3A game between Stillman Valley and Tolono Unity.
It was the 10th year Spencer has worked state championship football games.
