ASHTON – Police say it will be weeks before they have a full picture of what happened the night two men were killed when their car crashed into a ditch and threw them through the windshield.

A preliminary investigation indicated that Ricky Roberson, 23, of Stillman Valley, may have been speeding on Track Road on Nov. 17, when he lost control of his car, which rolled into a ditch, Lee County Sheriff John Varga said.

Roberson and his passenger, Robert Neary, 22, of Dixon, were pronounced dead at the scene.

How fast Roberson was driving won’t be known until the car’s black box is analyzed. Investigators also are waiting for a toxicology report to determine whether alcohol or drugs were involved, Varga said.
