Syracuse routs N. Carolina with second-half blitz

Brandon Triche and Arinze Onuaku combined for 13 points in Syracuse’s 22-1 run to open the second half and the Orange went on to a 87-71 victory over No. 6 North Carolina on Friday in the 2K Sports Classic championship.

The Orange (4-0) were the only unranked team in the semifinals of the tournament that benefits Coaches vs. Cancer but they left Madison Square Garden with blowout wins over No. 13 California and the Tar Heels (4-1).

No. 5 Villanova 71, No. 18 Dayton 65: Corey Fisher scored 18 points to help Villanova beat Dayton in the second round of the Puerto Rico Tip-Off.

No. 10 Tennessee 105, East Carolina 66: Scotty Hopson scored 25 points for Tennessee in the first round of the Paradise Jam.

No. 21 Georgia Tech 70, George Mason 62: Gani Lawal had 18 points and 14 rebounds for Georgia Tech in an O’Reilly Auto Parts Puerto Rico Tip-Off consolation game.

Derrick Favors also had 18 points for the Yellow Jackets (2-1). Kevin Foster led George Mason (2-2) with 15 points and nine rebounds.

No. 22 Clemson 89, UNC Greensboro 67: Trevor Booker scored a season-high 17 points, and Milton Jennings added 14 points for Clemson (3-0) in Greensboro, N.C.

Clemson shot 54.5 percent, broke it open by closing the first half with a huge run and extended its school-record winning streak in nonconference road games to 11.

Brandon Evans had a 17 points for UNC Greensboro (0-3).

No. 25 Maryland 82, New Hampshire 55: Landon Milbourne scored a career-high 24 points, and Maryland (3-0) cruised past visiting New Hampshire in its final tuneup for the Maui Invitational.
