Mustangs headed to state: Morrison wins 2A football semifinal, clinches trip to Champaign

MORRISON – The Morrison High School football team earned its first trip to the IHSA finals Saturday by defeating Gibson City-Melvin-Sibley 42-18 in a Class 2A semifinal at Bud Cole Field.

The top-ranked Mustangs (13-0) will play Maroa-Forsyth (11-2), a 31-14 winner over Marshall, in the 2A state championship, 1 p.m. Friday at Memorial Stadium in Champaign.

Morrison trailed GCMS 12-7 at halftime before exploding for 21 points in the first 7 minutes of the third quarter. Josh Vos caught a 65-yard touchdown pass from Andrew Cook to give the Mustangs the lead, and Kyle Janssen followed with TD runs of 1 and 33 yards to put Morrison ahead 28-12 midway through the third quarter.

Vos carried 24 times for 135 yards, and Janssen added 13 rushes for 113. Each senior scored three touchdowns.

Michael Romshek had 23 carries for 93 yards and one touchdown for the Falcons (11-2). He also caught one TD pass.
