The Iowa Hawkeyes finally left Carver-Hawkeye Arena with smiles on their faces Friday night.

The gang that couldn’t shoot straight in its first two games sank a dozen 3-pointers and dunked Bowling Green 68-46.

The Hawkeyes (1-2) shot poorly in their first two games and began the season 0-2 for the first time since 1970-71. Another loss would have meant Iowa’s first 0-3 getaway in 90 years, and there was some anxiety in the building as the Hawkeyes missed seven of their first eight shots.

Not to worry.

The Hawkeyes found the range, ticked off 10 straight points, turned a 7-3 deficit into a 13-7 lead and were never headed again. Iowa led 33-20 at halftime and doubled the count on the Falcons (1-2) at 40-20 early in the second half. The biggest lead was 23 points, reached initially at 51-28 on a layup by Brennan Cougill with 10:32 left.

Freshman Eric May went 4-for-4 on 3-pointers and led the Hawkeyes with 16 points.

Purdue 74, S. Dakota St. 63: Purdue coach Matt Painter said his seventh-ranked Boilermakers were outplayed and out-toughed by South Dakota St. However, Purdue wasn’t outscored.

E’Twaun Moore scored 22 points and beat South Dakota State in the first round of the U.S. Virgin Islands Paradise Jam.

No. 2 Michigan State 75, Toledo 62: Draymond Green had 15 points, and Michigan State kept up its home court mastery in a regional matchup in the Legends Classic.

No. 15 Ohio St. 76, No. 13 California 70: Evan Turner had 26 points and 14 rebounds, his fourth double-double in four games, for Ohio State in the 2K Sports Classic third-place game.

No. 15 Michigan 77, Houston Baptist 55: Manny Harris scored 25 points, and DeShawn Sims added 22 to lead Michigan (2-0).

Boston University 71, Indiana 67: John Holland scored 21 points, Jake O’Brien had 14 points and 13 rebounds, and Boston University rallied to beat Indiana in the Puerto Rico Tip-Off.

Tyler Morris added 13 points and five assists for the Terriers, who rebounded from a narrow loss to Kansas State in the opening round. Boston U. (1-3) did most of its damage inside, outrebounding the Hoosiers 52-32 and scoring 19 second-chance points.
