Comets in control against Fillies

The Newman girls basketball team used big runs in the second and third quarters Thursday to defeat Morrison 60-45 in a Sauk Valley Shootout game in Sterling.

Brianna Richardson scored 16 points, and Kaitlyn Hunsberger had 12 for the Comets (2-1), who outscored the Fillies 20-11 in the second period and 17-11 in the third. Sarah Cesarek added 11 points.

Shelby McBride and Danielle Stralow scored 12 points each to pace Morrison (0-3), and Marie Deter scored 10.

Stillman Valley 48, Rock Falls 39: The Rockets fell behind early, trailed by nine at halftime and never recovered in a Sauk Valley Shootout loss at Stillman Valley.

Kyli Anderson led Rock Falls (2-1) with eight points, and Addesyn Nailor added seven. Stillman’s Sarah Nicholson led all scorers with 18 points.

Milledgeville 43, Prophetstown 16: The Missiles bolted to a 23-2 halftime advantage on the way past the Prophets at the Oregon Tip-Off Tournament.

Keali Engelkens and Brianna Herin scored nine points apiece to lead Milledgeville (2-0), which got seven points apiece from Andrea Herin and Taylor Kent.

Claire Sigel paced the Prophets (0-1) with six points.

Ottawa Marquette 50, Polo 29: Marquette opened up a 32-12 halftime advantage on the way past the Marcos at the Oregon Tip-Off Tournament.

Julie Haye led Polo (1-1) with seven points.

Amboy 38, Mendota 33: Katie Nauman’s 15 points at the Oregon Tip-Off Tournament led the Clippers to their second straight win.

Hillary Liebing added nine points for Amboy (2-0), and Courtney Olson scored eight. The Clippers outscored Mendota 18-9 in the first half.

Bureau Valley 61, Henry 26: Lauren Hasbrook scored all of her game-high 21 points in the first half, leading the Storm to a lopsided win.

Bureau Valley (2-0) led 20-8 after one quarter, 39-16 at the half and 58-22 after three quarters.

Megan Mussche hit three 3-pointers and tallied 11 points for the Storm.

AFC 67, South Beloit 12: Grace Kennay and Kimmie Mairs each outscored the SoBos and led the Raiders to a season-opening win at the AFC Tip-Off Tournament in Ashton.

Kennay scored 25 points and Mairs added 17 for AFC, which held the SoBos scoreless in the second and fourth quarters.
