PROPHETSTOWN – Richard L. “Dick” Hummel, 80, of 100 Circle Drive, Prophetstown, died Wednesday, Nov. 18, 2009, at Morrison Community Hospital. He had owned and operated Chuck’s Place Restaurant, Prophetstown. He worked at various lumber companies and most recently was employed by Yarborough Electric, Prophetstown. He also served as 1st Ward alderman on the Prophetstown City Council for several years and as a two-term mayor of Prophetstown.
Mr. Hummel was born Aug. 9, 1929, in Prophetstown, the son of Robert J. and Mary L. (Martin) Hummel. He enlisted in the Navy in 1948, serving during the Korean War until 1952. He married Janice M. Olinger on Oct. 3, 1954, in Erie. He was a member of Prophetstown United Methodist Church.
Survivors include two daughters, Claudia (Don) Michaels of Grayslake and JoEllen (Barry) Morphew of Prophetstown; two sons, Paul Hummel of Prophetstown and Daniel (Michele) Hummel of Waukegan; three sisters, Vicki (Bill) Moore of St. Petersburg, Fla., Suzanne Adams of Prophetstown, and Nann (David) Johnson of Nashville, Tenn.; three brothers, Wiley (Becky) Hummel of Geneseo and Elwood Hummel and Louis (Betty) Hummel, both of Prophetstown; seven grandchildren; and two great-granddaughters.
He was preceded in death by a grandson; and a brother, Robert W. Hummel.
Memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Prophetstown United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Insun Yoon, pastor, officiating. Inurnment, with military honors accorded by Prophetstown American Legion Post 522, will be at Riverside Cemetery, Prophetstown.
Cremation rites have been accorded. Visitation will be from 9 to 11 a.m. Monday at the church. Arrangements were completed by Bosma-Gibson Funeral Home, Prophetstown.
A memorial has been established to Prophetstown American Legion Post 522.
