Sterling shoots down Cardinals

The Sterling Golden Warriors girls basketball team opened the season on Monday with a 40-15 win over Stillman Valley at Musgrove Fieldhouse.

Lauren Hernandez paced Sterling (1-0) with 12 points. Aleena Hammelmann added 11 points. Angie Minnick had eight points and 13 rebounds.

The Cardinals (0-1) turned the ball over 32 times.

Rock Falls 55, Morrison 49: The Rockets used a full-court press to build a 26-point lead by halftime in Morrison. When the press was called off the Fillies made a rally.

Britne Rosalez scored all 12 of her points in the first half for Rock Falls (1-0). Paige Last added 11 points, seven rebounds, three assists and two steals.

Danielle Stralow scored 21 points for Morrison (0-1).

Stockton 60, Polo 30: Julie Haye scored 13 points, but that wasn’t enough for the Marcos to keep up with a high-powered Stockton team in Polo.

Katelyn Grobe added five point for Polo (0-1).

Stockton (1-0) was led by Haley Magee with 17 points and Jessica Brunner with 14 points.

Temple Tip-Off Classic

Annawan 76, Fulton 23: The Steamers fell behind 21-4 in the first quarter and never came back at the Temple Tip-Off Classic in Geneseo.

Kim Rogis scored five points for Fulton (0-1).

Kelly Buresh and Jordan Jackson each scored 21 points for Stockton (1-0).

Geneseo 76. Erie 33: Devan Griffin scored 17 points as the Maple Leafs rolled past Erie at the Temple Tip-Off Classic in Geneseo.

Mariah Pratt had four points and eight rebounds for Erie (0-1). Kara Snowden and Lauren Saad each scored six points.
