Does the IRS owe you money? Returned refund checks looking for their owners
CHICAGO – The Internal Revenue Service is looking for nearly 3,600 Illinois taxpayers who are due refund checks worth more than $3.6 million.
The checks were returned to the IRS by the U.S. Postal Service as undeliverable.
“In Illinois, the average undeliverable refund is $1023,” IRS spokeswoman Sue Hales said in a news release. “We’d like to get this money back to taxpayers as quickly as possible. All we need is an updated address, and we can reissue the check.”
To find out if you are due a tax refund, go to www.irs.gov and click on “Where’s My Refund.”
To use this feature, enter information from the 2008 tax return including the Social Security number, filing status and refund amount. Taxpayers will get the status of their refund check and in some cases instructions to resolve delivery problems.
Taxpayers can also check on the status of their refund at 800-829-1954.
Here are some Sauk Valley residents Hales says have refund checks awaiting them at the IRS:
In Whiteside County: Lorena Barrientos and Abby Wright, Sterling; Michael D. Vary, Tampico; Uziel Chavez Garcia, Katie I. Morrison and Sarah C. Wirth, Erie.
In Lee County: Jeffrey Hanson, Laurine Pitzerhan and Martin Quest, Amboy; Casey Bond, Paula Holder and Richard M. Murphy, Dixon.
In Ogle County: Richard J. Olson, Mount Morris; Howard. E. Mantsch, Oregon.
In Carroll County: Glenn D. Stewart, Thomson.
