Always a Bears fan, but coaches have got to go
OK, call me a Monday morning quarterback or a Tuesday morning quarterback, depending on which game you’ve watched. I, myself, watched (as long as I could), the Bears’ 41-21 loss to Arizona.
Don’t get me wrong, I am a true Bears fan. I am not, however, a fan of the coaching staff. I have sat mulling things over in my mind and thought about all the players who are now long gone but doing very well.
Very well, indeed. For instance, take a look at Kyle Orton. Shipped off to Denver. Did he just magically gain these skills? No. He had them all along. He just needed the right coaching to bring them out. Congratulations to Kyle and the Broncos.
I can’t help but wonder what Jay Cutler must be thinking now. I do understand his reason for leaving Denver, but to come to the Bears? Surely he had seen tapes of how the team was coached, what plays they were told to use in a given situation. And he came anyway? I have seen the look on his face when, once again, the Bears have to kick. This particular Sunday, the poor guy was sacked four times. How does this happen week after week?
Then, I start thinking of other Bears “rejects” who have come into their own. Guys like Cedric Benson, Muhsin Muhammed, Bernard Berrian – just to name a few. Lest we forget Rex Grossman. Oh, how the fans hated him – until he took them to the Super Bowl. The following year, he was fighting for his job. Next thing you know, he isn’t even with the Bears anymore. I’ll bet he’s a happy guy right now.
I’m not tearing down the players. Anything but. Let’s just think about this for a moment. Could all these guys do complete turnabouts when traded to another team? No, I don’t think so.
What I do think is that we are trading the wrong people. I believe the whole coaching staff should go and get some new blood in there. These players have the talent. What they don’t have is the coaching to bring that talent to the forefront.
Is it fair to the players? Is it fair to the fans? I don’t think so.
Let’s give these guys the chance they deserve, cut loose the coaching staff, and leave the players alone.
