Building permit fees are going up

STERLING – After 27 years with no increase, the City Council Monday raised building permit fees to bring them in line with Dixon and Rock Falls.

Before the increase, a person doing a $5,000 roofing project would pay a $5 permit fee in Sterling, $10 in Dixon and $26 in Rock Falls.

A $50,000 commercial roofing project permit also costs $5 in Sterling, but $20 in Dixon and $116 in Rock Falls.

Now fees will be based on the value of the project and will range from $10 to $120 for projects that cost $50,000 or less.

For projects $50,000 or more, the cost of the improvement will be multiplied by 0.0025 to determine the fee.
