STERLING – Bernard J. Higley, 65, of Sterling, died Monday, Nov. 2, 2009, as a result of an accident in Lee County.

He was born on March 4, 1944, in Sterling. He served in the Army from 1961-1964, with the 1st Battle Group, 16th Infantry Rangers in Bohmholder, Germany.

Bernard married Frances DeLeary on Dec. 9, 1964, in Morrison. He was employed at the former Northwestern Steel and Wire Co., Sterling, for 29 years, as a shipping foreman in the 14-inch mill. He later worked as a welder at AZZ. Galvanizing, Dixon. Bernard was an avid bow hunter, a master scuba diver, and a private pilot. He enjoyed skydiving, racing motorcycles, stock cars, and mini racers.

Surviving are his wife, Frances; their son, B.J. (Stephanie) Higley Jr. of Lanark; their daughter, Ella Higley-Ranjel of Houston; his sisters, Ruth Ann Fargher, Debbie England, and Cindy (Jeff) McBroom; his brothers, Ed (Brenda) Higley, Mike (Sue) Higley, John Higley, and Tom (Shellie) Higley; and his six grandchildren. Emilie, Catie, Kaylyn, Nakita, Jameson, and Brady.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Harriett Higley; and his grandparents.

A gathering of friends and family will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday at McDonald Funeral Home & Crematory, 1002 12th Ave., Rock Falls.
