Sterling swims to conference crown

Allison Yemm earned co-MVP honors to lead Sterling to top team honors in the Northern Illinois Independent Swimming Championship on Saturday in Byron.

The Golden Warriors finished with 285 points, 10 more than second-place Byron. Rounding out the field were Ottawa (194), Morrison (168), IMSA (148) and Newman (111).

Yemm had a hand in four wins. She won the 200 IM (2 minutes, 22.03 seconds) and 100 breaststroke (1:11.32); teamed with Sophie Borer, Sarah Wolber and Hannah Munson to tie Byron in the 200-medley relay (1:55.52); and combined with Wolber, Rachel Lathe and Munson to win the 400-freestyle relay (3:51.12).

Munson was also a four-event winner. In addition to the two relays, she captured the 100 freestyle (56.40) and 200 freestyle (2:04.62).

Also earning a win was Borer in the 500 freestyle (5:38.42).

Dixonites Rose Thompson and Ciara Lightner led Byron to second place. Thompson, co-MVP with Yemm, won the 50 freestyle (24.65) and 100 butterfly (59.09), while Lightner took the 100 backstroke (1:02.86).

Thompson and Lightner combined with Chloe Wild and Kayla Kohlmeier to tie Sterling in the 200-medley relay.

Volleyball

Class 2A BV Regional final: Emily Cagan ripped nine kills and stuffed four blocks and Kalli Scheppers added eight kills as the Trojans beat the Storm 25-19, 25-17 in Manlius.

Rachel Barr had seven kills and four blocks for Mendota. Aubrey Franklin led BV with eight kill.

Class 1A Fulton Regional final: Megan Blumenshein had 12 kills as the Chargers recovered to beat Fulton 25-15, 22-25, 25-15.

Liz Sanquist led the Steamers with 11 kills. Kim Rogis had 18 digs and Amber Grant added seven kills and a block.
