Whiteside County Honor Flight is sending 37 World War II veterans to Washington, D.C., on Nov. 10, accompanied by 25 guardians.

They will visit the World War II Memorial, where there will be a ceremony, and also will visit the Pentagon, the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, Arlington National Cemetery and the Iwo Jima, Korean, Vietnam, Air Force and Lincoln memorials.

The veterans will fly out of Quad Cities International Airport at 7 a.m. and return at 10 that night.

The county has about 140 more eligible World War II veterans whom organizers would like to send to Washington, volunteer Bob Van De Velde said. The next flight will be in April.

Each trip costs $550 per person, but veterans fly free.

Whiteside County Honor Flight started raising money in June. The goal was $30,000; more than $70,000 has been raised so far, but more is needed to get all county veterans to D.C.
