Coloma Park District plans Hot Shots
Coloma Township Park District will sponsor its 31st annual Hot Shot Basketball Competition at 1:30 p.m. Nov. 7 at Merrill School, 600 Fourth Ave., Rock Falls.
The competition is open to boys and girls ages 8 to 18.
Hot Shot involves shooting baskets from five hot spots marked on half of a basketball court
with a 1-minute time limit. It tests a youngster’s speed, dribbling, and rebounding ability.
Starting at half-court, the participant dribbles into shooting range and shoots lay-ups or
fires away from the hot spots in any sequence he or she prefers. The competitor can attempt as many lay-ups as he or she wishes, however, only two lay-up completions are allowed, worth two points each. All other shots must be taken from any of the five hot spots.
Trophies will be awarded to the first- and second-place winners in each category. Third- through sixth-place finishers will receive placement ribbons and all others will receive a merit ribbon in each of the age categories.
Registration forms can be picked up before Nov. 7 at the park district office, 508 E. 11th St., Rock Falls, or just before the start of the competition at the school gym. There is a $1 registration fee. The office’s hours are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Mondays through Fridays.
The public is welcome to view the new development going on at Bowman Park, just east of the
lower dam along the river.
The development includes installment of paving brick, flower planter, seven light poles with 11 fixtures, memorial benches and plants. It runs from the stone pavilion north through the courtyard area to the river.
Construction is nearing completion and will be featured in the upcoming Rock Falls Home Town Holidays Celebration. Christmas lights and decorations will begin to be installed the first week of November in anticipation of the holiday season.
