Milledgeville’s Knutti advances to sectionals

Milledgeville senior Haley Knutti, golfing for the Eastland-Milledgeville co-op, fired an 88 at the Class 1A Lena-Winslow Regional on Wednesday to qualify for next week’s Byron Sectional.

Knutti’s score at Wolf Hollow Golf Course was topped by only two players: Elizibeth Blomgren of Rockford Lutheran and Elizibeth Curtiss of Byron, both of whom shot 84.

Teams advancing to the Byron Sectional are Rockford Lutheran (402), Stillman Valley (411) and Byron (413).

Peru St. Bede Regional: Bureau Valley finished sixth among seven teams at Spring Creek Golf Course with a 556 team total. The top three teams were Rock Island Alleman (390), Somonauk (425) and Peru St. Bede (442), and they’ll next see action at the Byron Sectional.

Abby Nielsen led BV with a 115. The medalist was Alleman’s Abby Frideres with 84.

Cross Country

Dixon boys, girls win at Streator: The Dukes scored a perfect 15 and the Duchesses had a 17 in a quadrangular on the road.

Zach Payne (16:49), Ross Kavanagh (17:00), Roy Hummel (17:13), Spencer Hill (17:16) and Aaron Grady (17:23) swept the top five spots in the boys race as Dixon beat Mendota (46 points), Streator (71) and Somonauk (78).

The only other full girls team at the meet was Mendota, who Dixon defeated 17-38. Haley Thorpe won the 3-mile race in 18:50, while teammates Megan Burger (20:08) and Tiara Sondgeroth (20:30) finished 2-3.

Rockets second at Byron: The Rock Falls boys and girls teams each finished second at the Byron Handicap.

On the girls side, Byron took first among six teams with 18 points. Rounding out the field were Rock Falls (70), Hampshire (75), Kaneland (77), Bureau Valley (162) and North Boone (174). The Rockets’ Cynthia Vazquez was 13th in 22:00.

On the boys side, Kaneland won with 22 points. The Knights were followed by Rock Falls (51), Byron (71), Bureau Valley (93), North Boone (146), Hampshire (181) and Genoa-Kingston (208). The Rockets’ Brandt Cole was third in 18:04.

Volleyball

West Carroll 2, Pearl City 0: Becca Fritz had eight kills to lead the Thunder to a 25-22, 25-15 win in Savanna.

Also for West Carroll, Kelsey Bull had five kills and Chelsey Sipe added four.
