Prep roundup: AFC volleyball takes River Ridge title

AFC swept five matches to take top honors at the River Ridge volleyball tournament on Saturday.

In pool play, AFC (22-2) knocked off Polo 25-10, 25-22; Pearl City 25-19, 25-18; at River Ridge 25-14, 25-10.

In the semifinals, the Raiders held off Warren 25-23, 27-25. Grace Kennay led the way with 15 points, 11 assists and seven digs. Samantha Vivian added seven kills and four blocks.

AFC took the championship with a 25-23, 14-25, 15-12 decision over Stockton. Ashley Hahn had a big game with eight digs, seven kills and seven assists. Kennay finished with 12 points, eight digs, seven assists, five kills, three blocks and two aces.

Steamers third at NE Invite: Fulton won three of fourth matches and placed third at the Northeast Tournament in Goose Lake, Iowa.

In pool play, the Steamers beat Maquoketa 21-9, 17-21, 15-8; Northeast 24-22, 21-12; and Prince of Peace 21-10, 21-13.

In the medal round, Fulton lost to Durant 25-16, 27-25.

Top performers for the Steamers included Kelsey Munck with 31 kills and two blocks; Lindsey Renkes with 21 kills and three aces; Allison DeWeerdt with 37 assists, nine blocks, five kills and three aces; Amber Grant with 15 kills and seven blocks; Lydia Schaver with 43 assists and 10 digs; and Kari Kuehl with 28 digs.

Boys cross country

Rockets second in Freeport: Rock Falls finished second out of seven teams in Freeport Invite at Highland Community College.

The Rockets had 79 points behind only Kaneland that dominated with 26 points. Oregon as sixth with 161.

Nathan Hudson finished fifth for Rock Falls in 16 minutes 42 seconds. Zach Billings was 11th in 17:06.

Girls cross country

Hawks third at Freeport: Jeneen Schier finished fifth in 19:49 to lead the Hawks to third place at the Freeport Invite at Highland Community College.

Oregon finished with a score of 71 behind Winnebago at 50 and Kaneland at 68. Rock Falls fifth at 95.

The Rockets were led by Savanah Davis in seventh at 19:53. Aubree Johnson was 13thin 20:25.

Boys soccer

Sterling second at Orion: The Golden Warriors won two of three matches to take second at the Orion Invite.
