Down, dirty defense: Warrior defenders produce points, then shutout

STERLING – Sterling had the recipe for success Friday night: An opportunistic, ball-hawking defense going against a mistake-prone, stuck-in-the-mud offense.

The result was a 21-0 victory for the Golden Warriors against Morris that left the NCIC Reagan race up for grabs. With the Redskins’ first conference defeat, each team has at least one league loss.

After a scoreless first half, Sterling’s defense made the play of the game. Facing a second and long from his own 20, Morris quarterback Martin Maldonado eluded a heavy rush and lofted a pass in the general direction of wide receiver Danny Niewinski. The pass was overthrown and picked off by Alejandro Rivera, who returned it 33 yards for the game’s first score with 9 minutes, 11 seconds left in the third quarter.

“I kind of read the quarterback on it,” said Rivera, who now has three interceptions. “I saw where he was going, then I saw (Niewinski) and it looked like it was going to be over his head. I just read it good, got the pick and then had great blockers.”

Maldonado served another interception on his team’s next possession, this one to Tyler Balsley. It set up a 39-yard TD run from Corey Judd and gave Sterling a 14-0 lead midway through the third quarter.

Morris (2-4, 2-1) finished with 153 yards of total offense, with 51 rushing yards on 28 attempts. The team’s best chance to score was late in the first half when it reached the Sterling 20, but the threat ended on the first of Maldonado’s three interceptions, this one to Ryan Billings in the end zone.

Addison Folkers led Sterling with 10 tackles. Aaron Harts and Chris Helfrich recorded sacks.

“Our defensive line was giving a lot of pressure,” Harts, a junior nose tackle, said. “Our linebackers had great pursuit. Addison did a great job at linebacker. We just had great pressure the whole game.”

Sterling’s offense churned out 278 yards, all on the ground. Judd (26-122) and Chevy Bushaw (11-119) each had long TD runs in the second half, and the Golden Warriors did not have a turnover on a sloppy field.
