Prep roundup: Dixon soccer holds off Jefferson
A couple of second half goals gave the Dixon Dukes soccer team the lead Saturday at A.C Bowers Field against Rockford Jefferson.
Some key defensive plays kept it as Dixon won 2-0.
Cesar Gonzales scored on a long pass from Damien Hale 10 minutes into the second half. Garrett Kerr added Dixon's second goal on an assist from Gonzales.
On defense, Jonathan Boynton broke up a couple key Jefferson breakaways.
Faith 4, Paw Paw 2: Seth Van Buren scored a pair of goals and Wes German made 16 saves in goal to lead the Falcons to a road victory.
Keegan McWethy added a goal and two assists and David Bierdeman had a goal and an assists for Faith (12-0). Andrew Boken chipped in an assist.
The Falcons also won Friday, defeating Tri-State 7-0 in Grand Detour. Bierdeman had four goals and an assist. McWethy added two goals and an assist and Adam Detig scored a goal and dished out an assist for the Falcons. Van Buren had three assists and Erick Vogeler added an assist.
Boys golf
Rockets 10th in Mendota: Rock Falls finished with a score of 261 in the Mendota Ryder Cup Tournament at Mendota Country Club, which placed them 10th out of 12 teams.
Princeton won the event at 223. Bureau Valley was ninth at 258.
Girls golf
Schuldt set course record: Sterling's Ember Schuldt set a new women's course record at Park Hills West in Freeport with a 2-under-par 70 as medalist of the Pretzel Invite.
Sterling finished 14th overall with a score of 443. Boylan won the meet at 346. Prophetstown was 12th with a score of 430 while Rock Falls was 20th at 541.
Girls swimming
Sterling second at Pretzel Invitational: The Golden Warriors won two relay events and two individual events in a 10 team meet in Freeport.
Sterling finished with 298 points just two points behind Freeport at 300. Byron was third at 214 while Morrison was seventh at 140 and Newman took ninth at 75.
Sterling's 200 medley relay team of Sophie Borer, Allison Yemm, Sarah Wolber, and Hannah Munson won in 1 minute, 56.39 seconds.
Wolber, Yemm and Munson teamed with Rachel Lathe to win the 400 relay in 3:47.65.
Wolber also won the 100 butterfly in 1:02.04 and Yemm took the 200 IM in 2:17.95.
Byron was led by Dixon's Rose Thompson, who won both the 50 freestyle (24.62) and 100 freestyle (54.40).
Newman's Marissa Gill won the 100 backstroke in 1:03.28. Gill was second in the 50 freestyle (25.50).
Morrison's top finish came in the 500 freestyle where Brianna Eizenga completed the race in 5:44.09.
Girls tennis
Sterling second, Dixon fourth at L-P: Sterling's Hannah Jakobs won at No. 2 singles and Dixon's Mandy Kent and Jennifer Guenther topped the field at No. 1 doubles as the Warriors and Duchesses fared well at the LaSalle-Peru Invite.
Boylan won the title with 18 points, while Sterling placed second with 11. Princeton was next with 10 points and Dixon was right behind with nine.
Also for Sterling, Bari Reynolds took second at No. 1 singles and Victoria Packer and Mariah Bardo teamed up to place fourth at No. 1 doubles.
Dixon's lone winners, Kent and Guenther, battled back from deficits in every match they played to claim the top spot at No. 1 singles. The Duchesses also got a third-place finish from Kayla Wilson and Holly Faivre at No. 2 doubles, and Thea Baldwin chipped in a consolation title at No. 1 singles. Kent and Guenther's win
Volleyball
Missiles second at Polo: Keali Engelkens and Alexis DawTyne earned all-tournament team honors to lead Milledgeville to a tie for second place at the Polo Tournament.
Engelkens had 15 kills, 12 blocks on the day, while DawTyne finished with 19 digs and five aces. Taylor Kent led the Missiles with 18 kills and 18 blocks, Briana Herin added 15 kills and five aces and Andrea Herin dished out 53 assists.
The Missiles won five of their eight games in the round-robin format and tied Scales Mound for the runner-up spot. Stockton went 7-1 to claim the top spot at the seven-team tourney.
The Marcos won one of their eight games on the day.
Faith 2, Quad City Christian 0: Parker Ortgiesen was dominate from the service line in the first game of a two game – 25-0, 25-20 – sweep of Quad City Christian on Friday night in Grand Detour.
Ortgiesen served all 25 points in the first game with six aces in the run. Jessica Bonnell had seven kills and five blocks for Faith Christian (7-3).
