Prep cross country: Reyes, Trancoso lead Comets to another win

There was a miniscule gap between Newman's top two runners at the Winnebago Invite on Saturday. 

Dylan Reyes won the 2.85-mile run in 14 minutes, 41.6 seconds, and his Comet teammate Jake Trancoso was second at 14:41.9. The Comets won the nine-team meet with a total of 56 points, ahead of Rockford Jefferson at 73. 

Dylan Harkness was also in the top 10 for Newman with a seventh-place finish in 15:13. 

Stein 37th at Kewanee: Amboy's Hauken Stein was 37th at the Kewanee Boiler Invitational with a time of 20:33.6. 

The Clippers' other runner, Taylor Daniels, finished 54th in 22:38. Knoxville won the meet with 38 points. 

Hall's Scott Janusick won in 16:23.1. 

Dixon sixth, Sterling 11th at Rock River Run: Sterling's Jacob Landis was the top local finisher at Hoover Park, placing 16th in 16:21.

Dixon scored 192 points, led by top-50 finishes from Ross Kavanagh (28th, 16:35), Roy Hummel (36th, 16:54), Aaron Grady (40th, 17:00), Spencer Hill (44th, 17:06) and Brock Mayberry (46th, 17:13).

Andrew McCormick was the only other Warrior to place in the top 75, finishing 64th in 17:45. Sterling scored 317 points as a team.

Belvidere North won the team title with 49 points, followed by Normal West (58) and Geneva (68). Geneva's Kevin McDowell won the 3-mile race in 15:09.

Girls cross country

Dixon second, Sterling 11th at Rock River Run: Haley Thorpe and Megan Burger finished 8-9 to lead the Duchesses to the runner-up spot at Hoover Park.

Thorpe covered the 3-mile course in 19:00, followed closely by Burger in 19:02. Teammates Tiara Sondgeroth (20:11) and Liz Hilliard (20:12) went 27-28, and Chelsea Sondgeroth continued her comeback from an injury with a 40th-place finish in 20:42.

Dixon had 111 points as a team, well behind winner Geneva (29), which had six runners in the top 12 individually.

Sterling placed 11th with 278 points. Stephanie Echebarria led the Warriors in 44th place (20:56) and Carissa Apperson was 49th (21:01).

Geneva's Kelly Whitley won the race in 18:13, and the Vikings also had runners place third, fourth, 10th, 11th and 12th.

Comets fourth at Winnebago: Newman finished with 127 points to finish in fourth at the nine-team Winnebago Invite.
