Sterling woman killed in car crash: Two teens taken to CGH for treatment

STERLING – A 81-year-old Sterling woman was killed Sunday in a crash at 23rd and Locust streets, near the Kroger grocery store.

At about 11 a.m., Marilaine J. Appenzeller was eastbound on 23rd Street, attempting to turn north onto Locust, when she was struck by a southbound car on Locust.

Appenzeller was later pronounced dead at CGH Medical Center.

The southbound vehicle was driven by Jamie L. Stumbaugh, 17, of Palentine. She and a passenger, Tyler A. Soeldner, 18, of Barrington, were taken to CGH for treatment of injuries and released.

No citations have been issued, and the accident remains under investigation by the Whiteside County coroner’s office and Sterling police.
