STERLING – David C. Swehla, 72, killed in Tuesday’s crash, may have been in town to close a land deal with the Sterling School District, officials there said Wednesday.
The district was in the final stages of buying Swehla’s home at 1602 Fifth Ave., said Tim Schwingle, assistant to the superintendent. District attorneys will try to determine whether and how the sale can proceed, which might be a matter of determining whether Swehla had signed papers, Schwingle said.
The school board voted in June 2008 to spend $115,000 to buy the 50-by-50-foot lot and home, which district officials said they wanted to expand Sterling High School.
Once the property is bought, the district likely will rent the home until it saves enough money to convert it into a parking lot or office space, Schwingle said.
