OREGON – Ethel M. Rhodes, 97, of Oregon, formerly of Dixon, died Sunday, June 28, 2009 at Oregon Healthcare Center. She was employed by Palmyra Mutual Insurance Co., as a secretary before retiring.

Ethel was born July 27, 1911, in Dixon, the daughter of Jacob and Sadie (Horner) Poffenberger.

She married Chester “Ted” Rhodes on June 28, 1933, in Dixon. He preceded her in death on March 27, 1970.

Ethel was a member of First Christian Church, Polo.

Survivors include two daughters, Janet (Calvin) Carver of Dixon and Joyce Bonnell of Lanark; six grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and one step-great-grandchild.

She also was preceded in death by four brothers, Harold, Jacob, Richard, and Arthur Poffenberger; one sister, Nora Fern; and one son-in-law, Roger Bonnell.

The funeral is at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Preston-Schilling Funeral Home, Dixon, with the Rev. Jeremy Heller, pastor of First Christian Church, Polo, officiating. Burial is at Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens, Dixon. Visitation is from 9 to 11 a.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.

A memorial has been established to First Christian Church, Polo.
