ISLAND LAKE, Ill. (AP) — Prosecutors in Lake County say recent corruption charges against a former northern Illinois mayor and his wife are part of an ongoing public corruption investigation.

Thomas Hyde, the former mayor of Island Lake, and his wife, Sharon, were arrested earlier in the week for allegedly taking part in a payroll scam. Authorities allege Sharon Hyde received more than $100,000 she didn't earn from 1999 through 2008.

Authorities allege Hyde claimed hours she didn't work at a preschool and her husband voted to approve the payments.

Authorities say the investigation in Island Lake began two years ago and more arrests are possible.

The Hydes' attorney Charles Smith has said his clients are innocent.

Thomas Hyde also faces forgery and misconduct charges for allegedly altering a bowling alley liquor license.
