Art for mental health’s sake - STERLING – The eighth annual Sinnissippi Art and Photography Exhibit, sponsored by Sinnissippi Centers and The Sinnissippi Foundation, runs from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. today and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday at Northland Mall.
“Revealing the Artist Within” is the theme of the show, which seeks to decrease the stigma that surrounds mental illness by celebrating the talents of those in the Sinnissippi community.
The exhibit will include live demonstrations by local artists Debb and Rick Munson and Linda Von Holten, and a drawing for prizes. Admission is free, and light refreshments will be served.

Get along, little bikers - Bike rodeos, designed primarily to teach little bikers how to stay safe, are on tap Saturday in Sterling and Prophetstown.
The Sterling Police Department’s rodeo runs from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday at Challand Middle School (Sunday, if it rains). There will be tours of an ambulance and the fire safety house, informational booths, food, music, magic and lots of fun for the entire family.
In P-town, the police department and Winning Wheels’ 10th annual Safe Wheels bicycle safety rodeo and fun fair runs from 9 a.m. to noon in the Prophetstown Elementary School parking lot (in the gym if it rains). Each child will receive 10 tickets for the fair at the gate; more tickets can be bought, 10 for $1. All proceeds benefit the American Cancer Society Relay for Life and the Creation Station.
Fun with the 1644th - ROCK FALLS – The Illinois National Guard’s 1644th Transportation Company is holding an open house Saturday at the armory, 716 Sixth Ave.
The event starts at 7 a.m. with a pancake and sausage breakfast; at noon, hamburgers and hot dogs will be served. Cost for each is $5 for adults, $3 for 9 and younger.
There also will be games and activities, live entertainment by DJ Reyes and photo opportunities with military equipment.
Poker run at the Bullseye - STERLING – Bullseye Bar and Grill, 103 W. Third St., is having an Armed Forces poker run Saturday at the bar. Proceeds will benefit the Sterling American Legion.
Motorcycles and all other vehicles are welcome. The cost to enter is $10; $15 with a passenger.
Registration starts at 11 a.m.; a salute to troops by the American Legion Color Guard begins at noon; the first out is at 12:15 p.m., and the last in is at 6 p.m.
Stops include: Countryside Tap, Sublette; Jeff’s Refs, Polo; Long Shot, Rock Falls; Railside Inn, Nelson; The Depot, Amboy; and Zero’s Tap, Dixon.

A salute to veterans - STERLING – A celebration honoring all veterans begins at 2 p.m. Saturday, Armed Forces Day, at Grandon Civic Center.
Seating is limited, and those attending are advised to bring lawn chairs. Concessions will be available. In case of rain, the event will move to the Sterling Coliseum, 212 Third Ave.
A dance follows from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Rock Falls American Legion, 712 Fourth Ave.
The celebration is sponsored by the Sauk Valley Detachment of the Marine Corps League.
