Newman nets win against Sterling

The Newman boys tennis team took the first step toward Sauk Valley supremacy Thursday, defeating intracity rival Sterling 7-2 at Sauk Valley Community College.

The Comets (3-1) won five of six singles matches and two of three in doubles. Luke Stover, Anthony Petrasko, Evan Knack, John Hermes and Alex Knack won singles matches for Newman. Stover and Dylon Busser won at No. 1 doubles, and Alex Knack and Hermes won at No. 3.

Colin Arnold scored both of Sterling’s wins, defeating Busser 6-4, 6-3 in No. 1 doubles and teaming with Freddy Rastede for a No. 2 doubles victory.

Dixon 8, Mendota 1: Patrick Ginn set the tone at No. 2 singles for the Dukes as they won at Emma Hubbs Courts.

Ginn defeated Mendota’s Ron Van Sickle 6-4, 6-2. He also teamed with Pete Balser to win the No. 1 doubles match over Connor Arteaga and Vince Bruno 7-5, 5-7, 10-6.

Other singles winners for Dixon were Caleb Bradley, Ben Dvorak, James Huffstutler and Joel Kipping.


Boys track & field

Dukes top field at Dixon: The Dukes’ distance runners helped overcome the sprint dominance of Oregon’s Jordan Thomas in a five-team meet at Dixon.

Matt Logan (3,200 in 10:22), Kyle Boone (1,600 in 4:36) and Kasey Ferrigan (800 in 2:00) scored individual wins, leading the Dukes to 141 points, ahead of Oregon (110), Rochelle (66), Rock Falls (52) and Pearl City (8).

Thomas was part of four wins for the Hawks, taking the 100 (10.85), 200 (22.65) and 400 (49.92), and teaming with Joey Ganus, Garrett Thomas and Nick Snyder in the 400 relay (44.01).

Other winners for Dixon were Preston Lumzy (high jump, 6-foot-2), Damian Hale (long jump, 19-1), Zach Costliow (discus, 134-8), and the 800 relay of Nate Diveley, Hale, Aaqil Khan and Wes Heniff (1:33).

For Oregon, Jeff Wehmhoefer (110 hurdles, 15.01), Nick Gallardo (300 hurdles, 42.2) and Justin Dvorak (shot, 51-4 3/4) won.

Rock Falls’ winners were Zohar Burciaga (triple jump, 40-6) and the 1,600 relay of Javier Cid, Brian Diaz, Burciaga and Alec Dorathy (3:32).

BV second at Princeton: Adam Sanden won the triple jump (42 feet, 5 1/2 inches) and the 200 dash (23.40 seconds) to lead the Storm to a runner-up finish at the Monier-Howard Meet.
